HKG rally to beat SIN 3-1 in women's team

(Beijing, December 18) Hong Kong China came from one set behind to beat Singapore 3-1 in the women's team opener of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 Table Tennis International Invitational Tournament which opened today at the Peking University Gymnasium.

Without veterans Li Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu on its roster, Singapore fielded such younger paddlers as Feng Tianwei, Yu Meng Yu and Sun Bei Bei. Yu, ranking No.1 in ITTF U-21 women's singles, lost to German Zhenqi Barthel and the Czech Republic's Iveta Vacenovska in the U-21 women's singles at the 2007 Pro Tour Grand Finals with teammate Feng winning the title. On the Hong Kong China's team, Tie Yana, Zhang Rui and Lin Ling were picked up with Jiang Huajun setting out of the event.

The first match was taken on between Lin Ling and Feng Tianwei. Lin set her pace quickly to win 11-5. Feng rallied to win the second 13-11 and Lin outscored 14-12 in the third. After Feng made the fourth 11-7, she showed her advantage in outliving exchange drives, winning the last set 11-6.

Then it was world No. 9 Tie Yana playing against No. 12 Sun Bei Bei. The scores stayed close as Tie won the first and second 11-7, 11-9 while Sun gained the third and fourth 11-6 and 11-3. Tie maintained her form in the decisive fifth to win 11-7.

After tying 1-1 on aggregate, the third match witnessed a doubles between Tie Yana/Zhang Rui and Singaporeans Yu Meng Yu/Sun Bei Bei with the tuneful duo of Tie and Zhang triumphing in three straight sets 11-9, 11-5 and 11-9.

Feng failed to keep her edge in the fourth match and lost to Zhang Rui 3-0 with Hong Kong China winning the opener 3-1 as a whole.
